The 200-day moving average is the dividing line between the amateurs and the professionals. Above that line you play long, below it you sit on your hands or look for shorts. Trying to get ahead of a Golden Cross is like jumping in front of an oncoming train hoping it stops in time.— Marty Schwartz — champion day trader & author of 'Pit Bull'
A golden cross happens when a stock’s 50-day moving average (SMA 50) rises above its 200-day moving average (SMA 200): the price over the last ten weeks is then, on average, higher than over the last year. A death cross is the opposite: the SMA 50 drops below the SMA 200. They are the best-known trend signals in the market.
This widget scans all FreeStoxx stocks every trading day and shows the new crosses of the last few sessions, plus stocks where a cross looks imminent. For every stock you immediately see what that signal was worth over the past 20 years.
Not investment advice. Past performance is no guarantee of future results. The backtest uses today’s list of FreeStoxx stocks; companies that disappeared over the past 20 years (bankruptcy, takeover) are missing, which can make the figures look slightly too good. Costs and taxes are not included. The Buy/Sell buttons open a real order screen at WH Selfinvest — nothing is executed automatically.
