What Gold futures are available?

The CME Comex Exchange

All gold futures are listed on the Comex (Commodity Exchange Inc.). This exchange is known for its metal futures, particularly gold and silver. The Comex is part of the CME Exchange (Chicago Mercantile Exchange). The CME is one of the largest exchanges in the world.

The four Gold futures

DThe standard gold future is popular with large investors. Smaller investors tend to opt for the mini or micro gold future. The 1-ounce gold future was introduced recently and is becoming increasingly popular.

Symbol Tick Tick value
Gold Future GC 0,1 10 $
E-mini Gold Future QO 0,25 12,5 $
E-micro Gold Future MGC 0,1 1 $
1 Ounce Gold Future 1OZ 0,25 0,25 $

Tip: A tick is the smallest possible price movement. Take the Micro Gold Future, for example. If the future is quoted at 4,000, the next price would be 4,000.1, then 4,000.2, and so on. The price can never be 4,000.05. The value of this tick is set by the exchange at £1. If you buy at 4,000 and the value rises to 4,000.1, your profit is 1 $.

What factors influence the price of gold?

  • Interest rate changes by central banks. When interest rates are lowered, the price of gold usually rises.
  • A weaker US dollar makes gold cheaper for buyers outside the US. This increases demand and prices.
  • Gold is a hedge against inflation. Higher inflation leads to higher gold prices.
  • Gold is a safe haven. Investors buy gold in uncertain times.
  • Other factors that influence the price of gold include economic data, ETF flows, and positioning in the futures market.

Why is Comex important?

Comex gold and silver futures are the reference prices used by central banks, mining companies, refineries, jewelers, and investors. This gives Comex a central position in the global gold market. Comex gained importance in the 1970s after the Bretton Woods agreement collapsed and the price of gold was allowed to float freely.
